I watched the film lights over the weekendimagesL7WG0HKK.jpg, which is an  American supernatural horror. The storyline of the film is about a family which are all targeted by a supernatural entity in the shadow. It all starts when a man working after hours is murdered by this evil creature. When his son Martin, is frightened by the same creature, which he sees his mother Sophie talking to an imaginary friend called ‘Diana’ in the shadow of her room. Martin does not sleep anymore during the night. His older step sister Rebecca who lives alone has been called up by a social assistant. She brings Martin home and recalls her own experience with ‘Diana’ years ago when she was young. Rebecca and her boyfriend Bret investigate the connection of Sophie with ‘Diana’ and come up to a scary revelation about their past. Lights out follows most of the horror codes and conventions as it is a typical horror film that is unsettling and causes discomfort to the target audience. There are many typical fears reinforced by the horror genre such as vulnerability and fear of the unknown, which these make a horror film as both the character and the viewer are oblivious to this and expect the unexpected. In addition, the film is set in a typical ‘haunted/ abandoned house’ this sets the tone of the film to be scary. Lighting is also used to set the tone of the film as it is very significant especially in the horror genre, which we see lighting that is very grimy/dull and creates a sinister feel to the film. Furthermore, lighting is one of the main prospects in the film as it relys on it, hence the title of the film ‘lights out’. Whenever the lights go out ‘Diana’ appears, this creates mystery and suspense for the audience as they are waiting to see this evil shadow in the darkness, in particular at the start of the movie we see ‘Diana’ move closer whenever the lights go out.
