Orphan is a thriller/ drama film released in 2009, the summary of the film is a married couple Kate and John Coleman are rebuilding their troubled marriage after the loss of their baby. Which the couple decide to adopt a child from a local orphanage, when they meet the nine-year-old Russian girl, Esther, at the St. Marina Orphanage, they immediately fall in love with the well-educated orphan. Their young son, Daniel, is hostile to his new sister; but their deaf mute daughter, Max, is enchanted with her at first. However, Esther isn’t as sweet as she is portrayed to be at fist impressions, which Kate starts to suspect that Esther is manipulative and possibly even psychologically disturbed, though John refuses to listen to his wife’s misgivings . In addition,  Kate can see through Esther’s loving charm which she tries to convince her friends and family that she isn’t as sweet as she’s made out to be, though by the time anyone starts to believe her its too late.

After Kate realises there’s something with Esther, she informs the head nun of the orphanage where she was adopted from and they warn her about Esther’s troubled mysterious past. she is convinced that Esther isn’t who she appears to be, even more so when the orphanage call her to tell her that there is no record of the Russian orphanage where she came from, though nobody believes her. In addition, Kate sneaks into Esther’s room and finds her bible which she discovers that she really came from a place called the Saarne institute, she then further research’s into the institute to find that its located into Estonia. Significantly, she rings the institute to discover that it isn’t an orphanage that Esther has come from but mental institution. Although Kate is convinced that Esther is evil, both her husband and her consular believe that she is relapsing into her old drinking habit, all goes wrong when Esther finds the bottle of wine that Kate bought the night before. Kate insists she isn’t going crazy but her husband threatens to leave her unless she gets help.

The film uses typical genre conventions, for instance they are a typical happy, loving family that are looking to adopt a new family member after their devastating loss of their baby. Another typical genre convention in the thriller genre is the villain which in this case there are two, the sweet, innocent nun that helps the family research into Esther’s past when all starts to go wrong. As well as the main villain being the little, vulnerable orphan girl that appears as innocent and helpless. the girl wears old fashioned style clothing, establishing that she’s an orphan and doesn’t have much unlike normal children.

I really like this film as it has a strong fluent storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what’s yet to happen in the film , it also has an unexpected twist throughout the movie, as the film goes on the twist unravels more and more until all is revealed.
